Scooter Rental in Chaloklum

Chaloklum is Koh Phangan's main fishing village, tucked into a wide horseshoe bay on the north coast. For decades this was a working port where squid boats returned every morning with the day's catch, and much of that character is still intact — you'll see fishermen mending nets on the beach, squid drying on bamboo racks, and a handful of local seafood restaurants that do genuinely excellent whole-fish dinners for a fraction of what the tourist beaches charge.

Chaloklum has quietly become one of the nicer places to base yourself on Koh Phangan. It's less touristy than Haad Rin, less wellness-intense than Sri Thanu, more accessible than Thong Nai Pan, and the bay itself is calm and swimmable. The real draw, though, is that Chaloklum is the gateway to Bottle Beach — one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, reachable only by longtail boat from Chaloklum (around 150-200 THB per person) or a steep 45-minute jungle hike.

Scooter-wise, Chaloklum is connected to Thong Sala by a reasonable road (25-30 minutes) and to Sri Thanu along the west coast (15 minutes). The road to Chaloklum is easier than the Thong Nai Pan mountain road but has a few hills. Inside the village, everything is flat and walking-distance. Having a scooter lets you explore the north coast — Mae Haad beach and the sandbar to Koh Ma (a snorkelling island reachable at low tide), Haad Khom, and quieter spots the west coast doesn't have.

Highlights of Chaloklum

  • Traditional fishing village with working squid fleet
  • Excellent cheap seafood — whole fish, squid, prawns at local prices
  • Gateway to Bottle Beach (longtail boat or jungle hike only)
  • Mae Haad beach and the Koh Ma sandbar — great snorkelling at low tide
  • Easier road access than Thong Nai Pan — manageable on a Click 125

Road Conditions in Chaloklum

The main road from Thong Sala to Chaloklum is mostly flat with a few gentle hills — much easier than the Thong Nai Pan mountain road. The west coast road between Chaloklum and Sri Thanu is flat and well-paved. Inside the village, all roads are short and flat. The road east from Chaloklum to Thong Nai Pan has more hills and switchbacks but is still significantly easier than the interior mountain route.

Parking in Chaloklum

Free parking is easy throughout Chaloklum — at the pier, along the beach road, and at every restaurant and guesthouse. For the Bottle Beach trail and longtail boat pier, there's an informal dirt parking area. Mae Haad and Koh Ma have beach parking near the Koh Ma viewpoint.

Where to Get Fuel in Chaloklum

No proper fuel station in Chaloklum itself. Small shops sell glass-bottle fuel at 50-60 THB per litre. Fill up at the Thong Sala PTT before heading north.

Best Time to Visit Chaloklum

December to April for the calmest north-coast seas and clearest snorkelling around Koh Ma. July-August is a quieter dry window. October-November can bring rough north-coast seas from tropical storms. The Koh Ma sandbar works best at low tide year-round — check tide tables.

Safety Tips for Chaloklum

Chaloklum is one of the safer parts of Koh Phangan for riding — flat village, gentle roads, slow traffic. The main risks are the coastal road east toward Thong Nai Pan (hills, curves, cars cutting corners) and dogs in the village at dusk. Wear your helmet on the main road — police checkpoints happen between Chaloklum and Thong Sala. In an emergency, the Koh Phangan Hospital in Thong Sala is 25-30 minutes away.

Riding Tips for Chaloklum

Eat at the local seafood restaurants along the beach road — cheaper and better than anything in Haad Rin.

Check the tide before heading to Mae Haad — the Koh Ma sandbar is only walkable at low tide.

For Bottle Beach, take the longtail boat rather than the hike on your first visit.

Fill up in Thong Sala before heading north — Chaloklum has only small glass-bottle sellers.

The road from Chaloklum to Thong Nai Pan is reasonable on a Click 125 but don't attempt it two-up on a Scoopy.
