Scooter Rental in Thong Sala
Thong Sala is Koh Phangan's main town, ferry arrival point, and commercial centre. Almost every traveller to the island passes through here first — the Raja Ferry, Lomprayah catamaran, and Seatran all dock at Thong Sala Pier. It's where the banks, supermarkets (Tesco Lotus, Makro, 7-Elevens), hospitals, and the vast majority of rental shops are clustered, so it's the logical place to pick up a scooter the moment you arrive.
The town itself is low-key — a grid of streets running inland from the pier, a night market (Phantip Food Market) every evening, a few bars, and a reasonable selection of accommodation aimed at travellers who want to be near the ferry rather than the party beaches. Most people don't stay here long, but passing through is unavoidable.
Scooter-wise, Thong Sala is where you want to sort out your bike. There are dozens of shops within a 200-metre walk of the pier, ranging from reputable operations to notoriously sketchy ones. This is exactly the kind of market where Skoot's deposit protection matters most: the standard Koh Phangan scam is the shop holding your passport and then inventing damage charges when you return. With Skoot, your deposit sits with us and damage claims go through the app with photos.
From Thong Sala, Haad Rin is 10 km southeast (20 minutes over the hill), Sri Thanu is 6 km north on the flat west-coast road, Baan Tai is 3 km east along the south coast, and Thong Nai Pan is 20 km across the mountainous interior (45 minutes on twisty roads). Fill up at the PTT station just east of town on Route 4030 before any longer ride.

Road Conditions in Thong Sala
Thong Sala's town streets are well-paved and flat. The main Route 4030 running through town is in good condition. The road south to Baan Tai and Ban Khai is flat and easy. The road north to Sri Thanu and the west coast is mostly flat and easy. The road east to Haad Rin has one steep section over a hill that has claimed countless rental scooters — take it slowly, especially if the surface is wet. The road inland to Thong Nai Pan is a proper mountain road with steep switchbacks and should only be attempted on a 125cc or bigger bike.
Parking in Thong Sala
Free scooter parking is abundant in Thong Sala — at the pier, at every 7-Eleven, outside Tesco Lotus, and around Phantip market. The ferry pier has a dedicated motorbike area (free). The only place to be careful is directly on the main beach road where police occasionally ticket illegally parked bikes. Most guesthouses and hotels have free parking inside their compound.
Where to Get Fuel in Thong Sala
The main PTT station is on Route 4030 just east of town — the cheapest and most reliable fuel on the island. There's a second smaller Caltex on the south side of town. Inside Thong Sala itself, several small shops sell fuel from glass bottles at inflated prices (60-70 THB per litre vs ~40 THB at the PTT). Always fill at the PTT before any longer ride, especially heading to Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach, or the north coast where stations are rare and overpriced.
Best Time to Visit Thong Sala
December to April is peak dry season — clear skies, calm seas, ideal riding. July and August are surprisingly dry and a hidden sweet spot. October and November are the wettest months with real tropical storms; avoid these if possible. The island is busiest for 3 days around each Full Moon Party, so if you're not here for the party, avoid those dates or book accommodation weeks ahead.
Safety Tips for Thong Sala
Thong Sala itself is safe and easy to ride. The dangers on Koh Phangan are elsewhere: the Haad Rin hill, the Thong Nai Pan mountain road, and drunk riders leaving the Full Moon Party. Never ride after drinking. Wear a helmet always — police checkpoints on the Thong Sala-Haad Rin road are common and the 500 THB fine is routine. Hospital visits for scooter injuries on Koh Phangan are so common that the hospitals have dedicated 'scooter ward' jokes among staff. Ride within your ability.

Riding Tips for Thong Sala
Use Skoot-verified shops near the pier — the unverified street-side ones are where passport-hold scams happen.
Fill up at the PTT station east of town before any longer ride — fuel in outer villages is limited and expensive.
Phantip night market for dinner is a rite of passage — park on the side streets, not the main road.
Hospitals are here: Bandon International Hospital and Koh Phangan Hospital. Worth knowing location if you're riding at night.
Avoid the Thong Sala-to-Haad Rin hill after heavy rain — the surface is slick and the gradient is brutal.
