Scooter Rental in Haad Rin
Haad Rin is the beach that made Koh Phangan famous: Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok) is the site of the monthly Full Moon Party, which has run since the late 1980s and still draws 10,000-30,000 people on peak nights. Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai) on the other side of the small peninsula is calmer and where most accommodation sits. The whole Haad Rin peninsula is less than a kilometre across, so walking between the two beaches takes five minutes.
A scooter is not strictly necessary if you're only in Haad Rin for the Full Moon Party and sleeping on the peninsula itself. But if you're staying more than 2-3 days, want to explore the rest of the island, or need to get to Thong Sala for the ferry out, you'll need one. Renting in Haad Rin itself is possible but prices are higher than Thong Sala and the shops are more transient — if you can, rent in Thong Sala and ride over.
**The Haad Rin hill is the single most dangerous scooter road on Koh Phangan.** The climb up out of Haad Rin on the road back to Thong Sala is unusually steep, with a slick surface that gets worse in any rain, and it's littered with rental scooters that have come down hard. Countless travellers break bones on this hill every year. Ride it sober, in daylight, at low speed, and never two-up on a Scoopy 110.
Do not ride after the Full Moon Party. Seriously — this is the single biggest cause of serious injury on Koh Phangan. Taxis run from Haad Rin back to other beaches all night on Full Moon nights. Use them. Your scooter will still be there in the morning.
Highlights of Haad Rin
- ✓Sunrise Beach — the Full Moon Party venue, every month on the full moon
- ✓Sunset Beach — calmer side of the peninsula, better for sleeping and swimming
- ✓Walking distance between the two beaches (5 minutes)
- ✓Restaurants, bars, massage shops, tattoo parlours all concentrated on the peninsula
- ✓20 minutes (fair weather, sober, daylight) back to Thong Sala for the ferry
Road Conditions in Haad Rin
The Haad Rin peninsula's internal roads are short, flat, and mostly fine — though crowded with pedestrians at night. **The road between Haad Rin and Thong Sala has one genuinely steep climb** out of Haad Rin that is the most injury-prone stretch of road on the island. The surface is concrete in sections, asphalt in others, and loses grip rapidly in any rain. Take it in first or second gear both up and down, and never rush it.
Parking in Haad Rin
Free scooter parking is widely available around the peninsula — most bars, hotels, and the main Chicken Corner intersection. On Full Moon nights, park well away from the beach itself as the crush is chaotic and bikes get knocked over. Your guesthouse parking is always the safest option. Don't leave valuables in under-seat storage on Full Moon nights.
Where to Get Fuel in Haad Rin
There's one small fuel station at the top of the hill just outside Haad Rin on the road back to Thong Sala, but it's often closed after dark and prices are higher than Thong Sala's PTT. Fill up in Thong Sala before coming over. The glass-bottle sellers inside Haad Rin charge 60-70 THB per litre.
Best Time to Visit Haad Rin
The Full Moon Party runs every full moon night year-round. Dry season (December-April) is the most pleasant for the party itself. October and November tropical storms can wash out the experience. If you want a quiet Haad Rin, come in the first week of the lunar cycle and avoid the 3-day window around full moon entirely.
Safety Tips for Haad Rin
Haad Rin has more scooter-related hospital visits per capita than anywhere else on Koh Phangan, and it's not close. The causes are always the same: riding drunk after the party, taking the hill too fast, riding two-up on underpowered scooters, and riding at night on unfamiliar roads. Do none of these things. Wear your helmet even on the short ride between the two beaches. The Koh Phangan Hospital and Bandon International Hospital in Thong Sala are your nearest options for serious injuries.

Riding Tips for Haad Rin
**Never ride back from the Full Moon Party.** Take a taxi, even if it costs 300 THB. This rule saves lives.
**The Haad Rin hill kills scooters.** Ride it slowly, sober, in daylight. Two-up on a Scoopy is reckless here.
