Scooter Rental in Thong Nai Pan
Thong Nai Pan is two crescent-shaped bays on Koh Phangan's remote northeast coast — Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi, separated by a short headland. This is the island's luxury end: Anantara Rasananda, Santhiya Resort, and a cluster of boutique beach hotels sit on these beaches, along with a small village of more affordable guesthouses and restaurants. The sand is fine white, the water calm, and the bays themselves feel almost entirely cut off from the rest of the island.
The catch is getting here. The road from Thong Sala to Thong Nai Pan crosses the mountainous centre of Koh Phangan — 20 km of genuinely twisty, steep mountain road with switchbacks, sections of poor surface in the rainy season, and some gradients that Honda Scoopys struggle to climb with a passenger. Until a few years ago the road was so rough that many hotels only accepted guests by longtail boat. It's paved now, but it's still a serious ride.
If you're staying in Thong Nai Pan, **rent at least a Honda Click 125**, and a PCX 160 is strongly recommended if riding two-up. A Scoopy 110 two-up will struggle on the climbs and overheat the brakes on the descents. The ride itself is beautiful — mountain jungle, ocean glimpses, cooler air — but it's not the place to learn scooter riding.
Once you're in Thong Nai Pan, a scooter is useful for riding between Yai and Noi, exploring Bottle Beach (reachable only by rough track and longtail boat), and making the occasional supply run to Thong Sala. Many guests leave their scooters parked for most of their stay and just enjoy the bays.
Highlights of Thong Nai Pan
- ✓Two of Koh Phangan's most beautiful bays — fine sand, calm water, luxury resorts
- ✓Remote, quiet, and feels cut off from the rest of the island
- ✓Serious mountain road to reach here — part of the adventure
- ✓Short ride to Bottle Beach access point (then longtail boat or steep hike)
- ✓45 min from Thong Sala over the mountain — or 60+ min via the longer coastal route
Road Conditions in Thong Nai Pan
The mountain road from Thong Sala to Thong Nai Pan is now fully paved but is genuinely challenging: 20 km of switchbacks, steep climbs and descents, blind corners, and occasional rockfall debris in the rainy season. It's nowhere near as dangerous as the Haad Rin hill but it demands continuous attention and a scooter with enough power. The coastal road from Chaloklum to Thong Nai Pan is longer (60+ min) but gentler. Inside Thong Nai Pan itself, the village roads are flat and easy.
Parking in Thong Nai Pan
Both Thong Nai Pan Yai and Noi have free beach parking at the main access points. Luxury resorts have guest parking inside their compounds. The village in Thong Nai Pan Noi has free parking along the main street. For Bottle Beach trailhead parking, there's a small informal dirt lot where you'll need to leave the bike for a few hours — nothing guarded, so take valuables with you.
Where to Get Fuel in Thong Nai Pan
There is no proper fuel station in Thong Nai Pan itself. Several small shops sell glass-bottle fuel at 60-70 THB per litre — fine for emergencies but inflated. The nearest real fuel station is back in Thong Sala, which is why you should always fill up there before leaving.
Best Time to Visit Thong Nai Pan
December to April for the calmest seas and clearest skies. Thong Nai Pan faces east-northeast so it can get rougher water from November monsoon swells than the west coast. October and November tropical storms occasionally flood the mountain road. July-August is a good quieter window.
Safety Tips for Thong Nai Pan
The main risk on Thong Nai Pan is the mountain road: fatigue, overconfidence, and braking mistakes on descents. Ride sober, in daylight, and break the journey if you're tired. Use low gear on descents instead of continuous braking. Don't attempt it on a Scoopy two-up. Once inside Thong Nai Pan itself, the area is safe and quiet. In an emergency, Koh Phangan Hospital and Bandon International Hospital are both back in Thong Sala, about 45 minutes away — not close.

Riding Tips for Thong Nai Pan
**Minimum Honda Click 125 for the mountain road.** A Scoopy two-up will struggle badly on the climbs.
Fill up in Thong Sala before leaving — fuel on the Thong Nai Pan side is limited and expensive.
Never ride the mountain road in heavy rain. Wait it out. Surfaces get slick and visibility drops fast.
Bring engine brake confidence — the descents will overheat disc brakes if you ride them continuously. Use low gear.
If you're nervous about the mountain road, ask about scooter delivery to Thong Nai Pan — Skoot can arrange it.
